What's the difference between Replace product, Change product options, Add a product and Recommended for you?

Four Tacey tools change the items on an order. Here is which one does what, so you turn on the right ones and answer customers correctly.

Four Tacey tools change the products on an order after checkout. They look similar from the outside, but each answers a different customer request. Knowing which is which helps you turn on the right ones and point customers to the right button.

At a glance

Customer says

Tool

What it changes

"I want a different size or colour of this."

Change product options

Swaps to another option of the same product, at the same price.

"I want one less of this" or "remove this."

Change product options

Lowers a quantity or removes a line, and refunds the difference.

"I want one more of this."

Change product options

Raises a quantity, and collects the difference.

"I ordered the wrong product."

Replace product

Swaps an item for a different product, from collections you choose.

"I forgot something."

Add a product

Adds a new item the customer searches for. Nothing comes off.

(You want to suggest something)

Recommended for you

Adds a new item you suggest. Nothing comes off.

Change product options

For items already on the order. It never swaps in a different product and never adds a new one. Only lowering a quantity and removing a line are on by default; raising a quantity and swapping size or colour are yours to switch on. A size or colour swap must cost the same as the original.

Replace product

For an item already on the order, swapped for a different product. The new product can cost the same, more or less: more is paid on Shopify's payment page, less is refunded after your approval (or automatically if you turned that on). You choose the collections customers may pick from, and nothing can be picked until you do.

Add a product

The customer searches your catalog and adds something new, alongside everything already on the order. You choose whether they can search every product, specific collections or specific tags. They pay the difference on Shopify's payment page.

Recommended for you

You, or Shopify, choose what to suggest; the customer picks from a carousel. It can carry a discount and a flat shipping charge that you set. Like Add a product, nothing comes off the order.

Which ones should I turn on?

  • Almost every store: Change product options (it is on by default for reducing and removing).

  • Stores with sizes and colours: turn on Let customers swap size or color inside Change product options.

  • Stores where customers often pick the wrong product: Replace product, with the collections they usually mean to buy from.

  • Stores that want more per order: Add a product, Recommended for you, or both. They run independently: turning one off does not affect the other.

Things all four share

  • They only work on items that have not shipped, and only while the order's edit window is open.

  • They refuse the same order types: Shop Pay Installments, orders created by another app, orders still waiting for payment, orders placed before 2019, local delivery, business-account orders, and cancelled or merged orders.

  • They only offer products the customer can buy in their own market.

  • Every change is written to your Ledger, with the money that moved.

  • An order can never be emptied through them. To remove everything, the customer uses Cancel order.
