How many times can a customer change the same order?

Set the maximum number of changes a customer can make to one order, and understand what counts toward it.

Written by Joseph Odera

Three, unless you change it. Tacey caps how many changes a customer can make to a single order, so a customer cannot keep reworking an order indefinitely while your team is trying to ship it. You can set the cap anywhere from 1 to 20.

Where to find it

Editing Tools → Global settings → Maximum edits per order.

How to set it

  1. Open Editing Tools and choose the Global settings tab.

  2. In Maximum edits per order, enter a number in How many changes are allowed.

  3. Click Save.

The lowest you can set is 1 and the highest is 20. There is no "unlimited" and no zero: zero would quietly switch off every tool, and that is what the Edit window switch is for.

One total, shared by every tool

This is the part that surprises people. The number is one total for the whole order, not an allowance per tool. The page says so under the field: "This total is shared across every tool a customer can use on this order. It is not a separate allowance per tool."

With the default of 3, a customer could fix their address, change a size and add a gift note. A fourth change of any kind, using any tool, is refused.

If you set it to 1, the page shows a warning, Only one change allowed, in total, because it is easy to set by mistake believing it means one change per tool.

What counts, and what does not

Counts: every change that actually saves to the order. A new address, a swapped product, an added item, an applied discount, a cancellation.

Does not count:

  • An attempt that was refused or failed. The page's own words: "Only changes that actually save count. A blocked or failed attempt never uses one."

  • A customer who was shown an address warning and chose to keep the address they had typed. Nothing on the order changed, so nothing is used up.

What the customer sees at the limit

Once the order has reached the cap, every editing tool on that order is refused with:

"You've reached the maximum number of changes allowed on this order (3). Reply to your order confirmation email if you need further help."

The number in brackets is your current setting.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not limit you. You can still edit the order in Shopify as often as you like.

  • It does not reset. A change used is used for that order. Raising the setting later does give that order more room, because the check reads your current number each time.

  • It does not replace the edit window. A customer inside the cap still cannot change an order once the window has closed.

Frequently asked

Why 3?

It matches what the leading order-editing apps use by default and covers the realistic case of a customer fixing an address, a size and a note. Change it if your customers need more or less.

Does downloading an invoice or sending a message use up a change?

No. Download invoice and Ask for help do not change the order, so they never use up a change, and they keep working after the limit is reached.
