Can I stop customers using a temporary or disposable email address on their order?

What Refuse known disposable email addresses does, what the customer sees, and why an email Tacey does not recognise is always allowed.

Written by Joseph Odera

Yes. Turn on Refuse known disposable email addresses in the Update contact details tool. When a customer changes their order's email to an address from a known temporary-inbox provider (the kind that self-destructs after an hour), Tacey refuses it and asks for an email they can actually check.

Why you might want this

A disposable inbox stops working soon after it is created. If a customer switches their order email to one, your shipping updates, delivery problems and any refund notices go nowhere. It is also a common trait of orders someone does not want traced back to them.

How to turn it on

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. Open Update contact details and click Configure.

  3. Tick Refuse known disposable email addresses.

  4. Click Save.

It is off by default.

What the customer sees

If the new email is on the list, the save is refused, nothing on the order changes, and the customer sees:

> We can't use a temporary or disposable email address for this order. Please enter an email you can check.

They can enter a different email and save again straight away. The refused attempt does not count toward their limit on changes for the order.

Only known providers are refused

Tacey keeps its own list of known disposable-email domains, such as Mailinator. An address from a domain that is not on the list is always allowed. So a customer using a small email provider, a company domain, or their own custom domain is never blocked because Tacey has not heard of it.

That means this setting catches the common throwaway services, not every possible one. It is a filter, not a guarantee.

The order of checks

Tacey first checks the email is correctly formed. A malformed email gets "That doesn't look like a valid email address. Please check and try again." Only a properly formed email is then checked against the disposable list.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not affect checkout. Customers can still check out with any email Shopify accepts. This only covers changing the email afterwards through Tacey.

  • It does not check emails already on your orders. Only a new email a customer is trying to save.

  • It does not verify that the customer owns the new email. For that protection, keep Email the old address when the email changes on, so the previous inbox is told about the change.

  • You cannot add your own domains to the list today.

Frequently asked

A real customer says their email was refused as disposable.

Tell them to use another address, and change the email for them in Shopify admin if they need to keep that one. The list only contains known temporary-inbox services, so this should be rare.
