The default recommendation is what your customer is offered when nothing more specific applies. It is the one setting Recommended for you cannot run without, because it guarantees the tool always has something real to show instead of an empty row.
When the default is used
With My rules: when none of your order-total, product or collection rules matches the order. If you have no rules at all, every customer sees the default.
With Shopify recommends: when Shopify has no recommendation for the products on the order, or cannot be reached at that moment.
The default is not used when a rule did match but every product it picked was filtered out (for example, because none is sold in the customer's market). In that case the order shows no recommendations.
Product or collection
Default recommendation type has two options:

A specific product | That one product, with its options. |
A collection | Products from the collection you pick, up to your Maximum products shown. |
A collection gives customers more to browse and keeps working when one product sells out. A single product is simpler and lets you push one item.
How to set it
In Tacey, open Editing Tools, click Set up tools on the Thank you page card, and click Set up next to Recommended for you.
Under What to recommend, choose Default recommendation type.
Under If no rule matches, show this, click Choose a product or Choose a collection and pick one in Shopify's picker.
Check the preview on the page: the card appears exactly as your customer will see it.
Click Save.
Messages you may see next to the picker
"No fallback chosen. A customer whose order matches none of the rules above is offered nothing." Nothing is picked yet. The tool stays on Needs setup until you pick one.
"This product is no longer in your store, so nothing would be shown when no rule matches. Remove it and choose another." The product or collection was deleted in Shopify.
"The item picked here does not match the type chosen above. Pick it again so your customer is shown the right thing." You changed the type after picking. Pick again.
A warning that the product is published to no sales channel. A product that is not published anywhere can never be shown, so pick one that is.
What the default still has to pass
Like every recommendation, the default is only shown if it is active, published to the customer's market, available for sale and in stock (when Hide out-of-stock items is on). With Hide items already in this order on, a default product the customer already bought is not shown, and the order gets no recommendation. A collection default simply skips the products already on the order.
What this does NOT do
It does not rotate between several fallbacks. Pick a collection if you want more than one product.
It does not override a matching rule. Rules come first; the default is the last step.
It does not ignore markets. A default you do not sell in a customer's country is never shown to them.
