How do I limit how many changes a customer can make to one order in Tacey?

Use Maximum edits per order to cap the total number of changes a customer can make, across every tool.

Written by Joseph Odera

Tacey lets you cap how many changes a customer can make to a single order, in total, across every tool. By default a customer can make 3 changes to an order. You can set anything from 1 to 20.

Where to set it

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. Click the Global settings tab.

  3. Find Maximum edits per order.

  4. Enter a number in How many changes are allowed.

  5. Click Save in the save bar at the top of the page.

How the limit counts

As the setting explains: "How many changes a customer may make to one order, in total, across every tool combined. Only changes that actually save count. A blocked or failed attempt never uses one."

So:

  • One saved change uses one. Fixing the address, then later changing a quantity, uses two.

  • It is shared across every tool. Tacey reminds you: "This total is shared across every tool a customer can use on this order. It is not a separate allowance per tool."

  • Attempts that do not save do not count. If a change is refused or fails, the customer has not used one.

  • Keeping an address does not count. A customer who taps Keep my address after an address warning has not changed anything, so it does not use one.

Setting it to 1

If you set the limit to 1, Tacey shows a warning so it is not set by mistake:

> Only one change allowed, in total > With this set to 1, a customer can make exactly one change to an order, of any kind, using any tool, before every tool refuses further changes on it.

That can be the right choice if you want customers to fix one mistake and nothing more. Just be sure that is what you mean.

Choosing a number

  • Low (1 or 2): keeps orders stable and limits back and forth. Good if your team handles each change by hand afterwards.

  • Default (3): enough to fix an address and adjust an item or two.

  • Higher (up to 20): suits stores where customers commonly tweak orders, such as subscription-style or made-to-order products.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not limit you. You can change any order yourself in Shopify.

  • It does not replace the edit window. Customers can only make changes while the window is open, however many changes they have left.

  • It is not a limit per tool. It is one total for the whole order.

Frequently asked

What does the customer see when they reach the limit?

Every tool refuses further changes on that order. The customer can still contact you in the usual way, such as by replying to their order confirmation email.

Does the limit reset?

No. It is a total for the life of the order.
