Can customers upgrade to faster shipping after placing an order?

Set up Tacey's Upgrade shipping method tool so customers can switch to a faster, pricier shipping rate from their order page and pay the difference.

Written by Joseph Odera

Yes. With the Upgrade shipping method tool, a customer who needs their order sooner can switch to a faster shipping rate from their order page and pay the difference. The rates and prices come straight from your own Shopify shipping settings, so they match what your checkout would charge.

How to turn it on

  1. Open Editing Tools, go to the Tools tab and open Upgrade shipping method.

  2. Under Which shipping rates can be offered, keep Every rate my checkout offers or choose Specific rates.

  3. Set Hours to wait for payment on an upgrade (24 by default).

  4. Click Save, then Turn on.

Customer editing must be on in Global settings, and the Tacey block placed on your Thank you and Order status pages.

Hours to wait for payment on an upgrade

24

From 1 to 168 hours. How long the order is held waiting for the customer to pay.

Where the rates and prices come from

Tacey asks Shopify for the shipping rates your checkout would offer for this order, today, to this customer's address, in the currency they paid in. Nothing is typed in by hand, so if you change a rate in Shopify the next customer sees the new price.

Only faster, more expensive rates are offered. A cheaper rate is never shown. If nothing costs more than what the customer already has, they see "There's no faster shipping option for this order."

What the customer sees

  1. They click Upgrade shipping method. They see "Your order ships with Standard." (their current method) and the rates they can upgrade to.

  2. They pick one and see Payment due with the difference, marked "Shopify's own calculated total, including tax."

  3. They press Confirm & pay.

  4. They see Shipping upgraded and "Your order will ship with Express once the difference is paid.", with a Pay now button that opens Shopify's own payment page.

Just before saving, Tacey asks Shopify for the rates again. If the rate has changed or is no longer offered, the customer sees "Shipping options changed. Please choose again." rather than paying an old price.

What happens to the order

  • The old shipping line is replaced with the new one on the order in Shopify.

  • The order is held from shipping until the difference is paid, and tagged tacey-payment-owed.

  • The ledger records the change and the amount due. Once paid, it shows the amount, and the payment counts toward Added after checkout on Home.

When it is refused

The customer sees

Why

"Part of this order has already shipped, so its shipping can't be changed."

Something on the order has already been fulfilled.

"This order ships in more than one way, so shipping can't be changed online."

The order has more than one shipping line.

"This change needs a payment, and this order was paid in a different currency from ours, so this change cannot be made here."

The order was paid in a different currency from your store's.

"That option costs the same as your current shipping."

The chosen rate is not more expensive.

Local pickup orders do not show the tool, and the usual refusals apply too: a closed edit window, your blocked order tags, the maximum edits per order, and order types Shopify will not let apps change.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not downgrade shipping or refund shipping.

  • It does not charge the customer automatically. They pay on Shopify's own page.

  • It does not change your carrier's actual delivery speed. The new method is recorded on the order; you or your warehouse ship it with that service.
