How do I offer a discount on recommended products after checkout?

Turn on a percentage or fixed discount for items customers add from Recommended for you, and see exactly how it is applied.

Written by Joseph Odera

A small discount gives a customer a reason to add the item now rather than later. Recommended for you can take a percentage or a fixed amount off each recommended item a customer adds. It is off by default, and nothing is discounted until you turn it on.

How to turn it on

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools, click Set up tools on the Thank you page card, and click Set up next to Recommended for you.

  2. Go to Offer a discount.

  3. Turn on Discount recommended items.

  4. Choose a Discount type: - Percentage off: for example, 15 takes 15% off each item. - Fixed amount off: for example, 5.00 takes 5.00 off each item.

  5. Enter the Discount amount, digits only.

  6. Click Save.

The rules for the amount

  • A percentage must be above 0 and below 100. To give an item away, use the Free gift tool instead.

  • A fixed amount must be above 0 and less than the item's price.

If the discount is on but the amount breaks one of these rules, the page tells you, and no discount is given until you fix it:

  • "The discount is on but has no amount, so no discount is given."

  • "The discount amount is not a number, so no discount is given. Use digits only, for example 15 or 5.00."

  • "A discount of 0 takes nothing off, so no discount is given."

  • "A percentage must be less than 100, so no discount is given."

  • "An amount is set, but the discount is off, so no discount is given. Turn it on to use it."

How a fixed discount affects which products appear

A fixed amount must stay below each item's price. Any option priced at or below your fixed amount is not recommended at all, because the discount would make it free or less. The page warns you: "Items priced at 10.00 or less are not recommended, because this discount would make them free or less." Items that already cost nothing are still offered, with no discount applied.

What the customer sees

  1. Each card shows your offer as a label, for example "15% off", next to the product's normal price.

  2. When they choose an item and tap Review the amount, Shopify works out the discounted price, the tax and the new order total. That figure is Shopify's own; Tacey never calculates the discounted price itself.

  3. They confirm with Confirm & pay and pay the balance on Shopify's payment page.

The discount lands on the added line of the order in Shopify, so you see it on the order like any other line discount.

Only recommended items get it

The discount applies only to an item added through Recommended for you, and only to a product this tool actually offered on that order. A customer cannot claim it on some other product, and items added through Add a product never get it.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not discount the rest of the order. Only the added recommended item is discounted.

  • It does not create a discount code. Nothing appears in Shopify's Discounts list; the discount is applied directly to the added line.

  • It does not turn itself on. No recommended item is ever discounted by default.

Frequently asked

Can I set a different discount for different products?

Not today. One discount applies to every recommended item.

Does the discount show in my customer's currency?

The label on the card is shown in the customer's language. The discounted amount the customer pays is Shopify's own calculation, shown on the review step before they confirm.
