How do I let customers see or edit my own order fields, like a delivery date or monogram?

Share your own order metafields and order attributes with customers on the order page: pick a field, choose see or edit, and what to check before you switch one on.

Written by Joseph Odera

If your store already keeps extra information on orders, such as a preferred delivery date, a monogram, an engraving or a gift wrap note, you can show it to the customer on their order page, and let them correct it. This lives in the Order notes & gift messages tool, under Order fields customers can see or edit.

What kinds of fields you can share

  • Order metafields: custom fields you (or another app) defined on orders in Shopify.

  • Order attributes: the extra details some themes and apps collect at checkout, such as a "Delivery date" box in your cart.

Tacey lists the order metafield definitions in your store, plus the attributes it finds on your recent orders. Attributes whose name starts with an underscore (`_`) are private by Shopify convention and are never offered.

How to set it up

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools, then Order notes & gift messages, then Configure.

  2. Under Order fields customers can see or edit, pick a field. Each one is labelled Order metafield or Order attribute.

  3. Check the Current value on line. It shows what that field holds on one of your real recent orders.

  4. Set Name customers see, the label shown on the order page. It starts as the field's own name.

  5. Turn on Customers can see this to show the current value.

  6. Turn on Customers can edit this as well if customers may change it.

  7. Click Save.

You can share up to 10 fields.

Check before you share

The settings page reminds you: "Check the current value before you switch a field on. Anything you share is shown to the customer on their order page, so never share an internal field such as a cost or a staff note." That is why it shows you a real current value first. A field called "notes" might hold a supplier comment you would not want a customer reading.

Which fields can be edited

Customers can only change plain text fields (single-line or multi-line text metafields, and order attributes). Other types, such as dates, numbers or lists, can be shown but not edited. If you turn on editing for one of those, the settings page tells you: "Editing is on, but customers can only see this field: its type is not plain text, so it can't be changed from the order page."

What the customer sees

On the order page, shared fields appear with the name you chose. A field with no value shows Not set yet. A see-only field says "Shown for your information. It can't be changed here." An editable field has a Save button, and after saving the customer sees Saved and "Your order has been updated."

A customer's edit replaces the field's value, and uses the same Maximum length as notes and gift messages (500 characters by default).

Warnings you might see

  • "This field no longer exists in your store, so customers see nothing for it. Remove it." You deleted the metafield definition in Shopify.

  • "Not on any recent order, so most customers will see it empty." An attribute that has not appeared on your recent orders.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not create new fields. Define a metafield in Shopify first, or collect an attribute at checkout, then share it here.

  • It does not share anything you have not switched on. A field is invisible to customers until you turn on Customers can see this.

  • It does not change hidden attributes, or any attribute other than the one the customer edited.
