Yes, if you allow it. Turn on Let customers change their name in the Update contact details tool, and customers can fix the first and last name on their order, for example a misspelled surname or a gift that should be addressed to someone else.
Which name it changes
It changes the name on the order's shipping address: the name that goes on the parcel label. It is the same name field the Edit delivery address tool sits alongside. It does not change the name on the customer's Shopify account.
How to turn it on
In Tacey, open Editing Tools.
Open Update contact details and click Configure.
Tick Let customers change their name.
Click Save.
It is off by default.
What the customer sees
In the Update contact details form, the customer ticks Change my name, which reveals first and last name fields. They type the new name and save. If you have Ask the customer to confirm on (the default), they see Check before we save with the new details, then Confirm and save.
The rules a new name must pass
It cannot be blank. A ticked box with an empty first or last name is refused: "Enter your first name, or leave the box unchecked to keep your current name." (or last name). A name is never deleted this way, even if you allow customers to remove their email or phone.
It must look like a name. A name containing `<` or `>`, hidden formatting characters, or no letters at all (for example only digits or punctuation) is refused: "That name has characters we can't save. Please remove any symbols like < or > and try again." Letters from any alphabet, accents, apostrophes, hyphens and spaces are fine.
Your length limits apply. If you set Max characters - first name or Max characters - last name in the Edit delivery address tool, a longer name is refused rather than cut short, and the customer is pointed to reply to their order confirmation email.
What gets recorded
The change appears in the order's history in Tacey as Contact details changed, with the old and new first and last names and that the customer asked for it. It counts as one of the customer's allowed changes on the order.
When to turn it on
You sell a lot of gifts and customers often need the recipient's name on the label.
Your carrier or a customs form needs the exact legal name, and typos cause delays.
Leave it off if your orders need the buyer's name to match their payment details for fraud checks, and handle name changes yourself.
What this does NOT do
It does not change the customer's account name, even with Also update the customer's account on. That setting only covers email and phone.
It does not change the billing name.
It does not send any email about the name change, and it is not included in the Email me when a customer changes their contact details summary, which covers email and phone.
Frequently asked
A customer changed the name and address in one go. Is that one change or two?
The name is saved through Update contact details and the address through Edit delivery address, so they are two separate saves and each counts toward the limit.
