Where do I find a gift message a customer left on their order?

How to spot a gift message a customer left: the tacey-gift-message order tag, the Slack edit feed, and where the message itself is stored on the order.

Written by Joseph Odera

There are three places to see a gift message. The quickest is the order tag.

How Tacey tells you a gift message was left

Where

What you see

The order tag

When a customer leaves a gift message, Tacey adds the tag tacey-gift-message to the order. Tags show on the Orders list and at the top of the order page, so you can spot gift orders without opening anything. You can also filter the Orders list by this tag.

Your Slack edit feed

If your store has the Tacey edit feed connected to Slack, an Order edited card appears with Customer left set to Gift message, and a Message line showing the message itself (long messages are shortened).

The order's Metafields

The full message is the value of the field named Tacey gift message.

The tag is added only when a customer leaves a gift message with Tacey's own gift message box. A plain order note, or a message written into your own custom field, does not add it.

Step by step

  1. In Shopify admin, open Orders. Orders with a gift message carry the tacey-gift-message tag.

  2. Click the order and scroll down to Metafields.

  3. Find Tacey gift message. The customer's message is its value.

You can also see it in Tacey: open the order and look at its history, where it appears as Note or gift message added, labelled Gift message.

Why the message itself is not pinned at the top of the order

The tag is how Tacey works around this. Shopify lets you pin your own order fields so they show at the top of the order page. But Shopify does not allow a field that belongs to an app, like Tacey's gift message, to be pinned. This is a permanent Shopify rule, not a setting on either side. So the Tacey gift message will always sit in the Metafields section rather than at the top.

The easiest fix: use your own gift field instead

If you already have your own order field for gift notes (for example a "Gift wrap note" metafield you created), you can have customers write straight into it:

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools, then Order notes & gift messages, then Configure.

  2. Under Order fields customers can see or edit, pick your gift field.

  3. Turn on Customers can see this and Customers can edit this.

  4. Untick Let customers add a gift message, so customers are not offered two boxes that do the same job.

  5. Click Save.

Because the field is yours, you can pin it, and every new gift message shows at the top of the order. Messages written into your own field do not get the tacey-gift-message tag. See Should I use Tacey's gift message box or my own gift note field? for the trade-offs.

Things to know

  • A new gift message replaces the old one. If the customer adds a gift message twice, the field holds the latest one. The order's history in Tacey keeps both.

  • You can edit it yourself. The Tacey gift message field is editable by you in Shopify admin if you need to correct a typo before printing.

  • It is removed if you uninstall Tacey. Shopify removes app-owned fields when the app is uninstalled. If you want gift messages to outlive the app, use your own field as above.

What this does NOT do

  • Tacey does not email you when a gift message is left. Look for the tag, the Slack card, or the Metafields section.

  • Tacey does not add the tag for a plain note or for your own custom field. Only a gift message from Tacey's gift message box is tagged.

  • The tag is not removed if the customer later replaces their message. It marks that a gift message was left on the order.

Frequently asked

A customer says they left a gift message but the Notes field is empty.

That is expected. Gift messages never go in Notes. Check Metafields, then Tacey gift message.

I switched to my own field. Where are the older messages?

Messages left before you switched stay in the Tacey gift message field. New ones go to your field.
