Can customers add a forgotten discount to an order after checkout?

Set up Tacey's Apply a discount tool so a customer who forgot a discount can claim one of your active Shopify discounts on an order they already placed.

Yes. With the Apply a discount tool, a customer who forgot to use a discount at checkout can claim it from their order page afterwards. You choose which of your active Shopify discounts they can claim, and the difference goes back to them.

How it works, in one paragraph

Shopify has no way to apply a discount code to an order that is already placed. Codes only work at checkout. So instead of asking the customer to type a code, Tacey shows them the discounts you picked as buttons, such as 10% off, and applies the percentage to their order directly. They already paid full price, so the difference is owed back to them.

Before you start

  • You need at least one active percentage discount in Shopify. Create it in Shopify's Discounts as normal. Only percentage discounts can be offered, because that is what Shopify can apply to a placed order.

  • Customer editing must be on, and the Tacey block placed on your Thank you and Order status pages.

How to set it up

  1. Open Editing Tools, go to the Tools tab and open Apply a discount.

  2. Under Discounts a customer may claim, click Add a discount and pick from your shop's active discounts. If you have none, the picker says "You do not have any active discounts yet." and links to Manage discounts in Shopify.

  3. Choose How the customer gets the discount back: their original payment method or store credit.

  4. Leave Once per order on unless you want customers to stack discounts.

  5. Click Save, then Turn on.

Until at least one discount is picked, the tool stays off your customers' order page and the settings page tells you why, rather than showing an empty button.

Stops a customer applying more than one discount to the same order.

What the customer sees

  1. They click Apply a discount on their order page.

  2. They see "Choose a discount to apply to this order." and one button per discount, such as 10% off and 15% off.

  3. A notice tells them where the difference will go, for example "The difference will be refunded to your original payment method. We'll work out the exact amount."

  4. They press Apply 10% off.

  5. They see Your discount has been applied, with where the money is going.

What happens to the order

  • The percentage is applied to every item on the order that has not shipped yet. Items that already shipped cannot be discounted afterwards.

  • Shopify recalculates the order and works out how much is owed back.

  • The refund follows your Refunds setting in Global settings: by default it waits for you to click Approve refund. Store credit is issued straight away.

  • The ledger records Discount applied.

Only discounts that are still live

Tacey checks your discounts in Shopify every time. If you delete or end a discount in Shopify, customers stop seeing it straight away, even if it is still in your picked list. On the settings page, it is marked (no longer matches an active discount) so you can remove it.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not accept typed codes. Customers choose from buttons.

  • It does not offer fixed-amount or free-shipping discounts. Percentage only.

  • It does not check your discount's own rules, such as minimum spend or eligible products. Pick only discounts you are happy for any customer to claim after checkout.

  • It does not discount shipped items.
