Can customers change their delivery address to a PO box?

Choose whether Tacey warns customers about PO boxes or refuses them, and exactly what the customer is told in each case.

Written by Joseph Odera

By default, yes, with a warning. Many couriers cannot deliver to a PO box, so Tacey lets you choose: warn the customer and still save the address, or refuse PO boxes outright.

The two options

Option

What happens

Warn the customer (default)

They can still use a PO box, but they are told their carrier may not deliver to one.

Refuse PO boxes

The address cannot be saved if it is a PO box.

How to change it

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. Open Edit delivery address and click Configure.

  3. Under Shipping restrictions, find PO boxes.

  4. Pick Warn the customer or Refuse PO boxes.

  5. Click Save.

What the customer sees

With Warn the customer, the address saves and the customer sees:

> Your carrier may not deliver to a PO box. Your address is saved. Reply to your order confirmation email if you want to change it.

When the address check spots a PO box before saving, the customer also sees a "PO box" label and the line: "This looks like a PO box. Postal services deliver there, but some couriers cannot."

With Refuse PO boxes, the save is refused and nothing on the order changes. The customer sees:

> We can't deliver to PO boxes. Enter a street address instead.

They can type a street address and save again straight away. A refused attempt does not count toward your limit on changes per order.

Which option should I pick?

  • Warn the customer if you ship with a postal service that delivers to PO boxes, or if you ship with several carriers and some can handle them. It avoids turning away a customer whose PO box is perfectly deliverable.

  • Refuse PO boxes if every carrier you use needs a street address, for example a courier that requires a signature. A refused edit is cheaper than a returned parcel.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not change checkout. Customers can still enter a PO box at checkout if Shopify allows it. This setting only covers changes made afterwards through Tacey.

  • It does not affect orders already placed with a PO box. It only decides what happens when a customer edits the address.

  • It does not choose a carrier for you or change the order's shipping method.

Frequently asked

How does Tacey know it is a PO box?

Tacey looks for PO box wording (such as "PO Box 123") in both address lines the customer typed. This runs on Tacey's side when the customer saves, so it works the same way even when the separate address check is unavailable.

Can I refuse PO boxes only for some countries?

Not today. The setting applies to every address change on your store.
