Can I stop customers changing their shipping address to another country?

How the Keep edits inside the original country setting works, why it is on by default, and what customers see either way.

Written by Joseph Odera

Yes, and Tacey does it for you by default. The Keep edits inside the original country setting keeps every address change inside the country the order was placed for. A customer can fix their street, city or postal code, but cannot send a paid parcel abroad.

Why it is on by default

Redirecting a parcel to another country after payment has cleared is a common way to misuse a stolen card. Moving an order across a border can also change duties, customs paperwork and shipping costs. So the safe starting point is locked, and you unlock it only if you actively want to.

If you ever saved your address settings before this setting existed, Tacey still treats your country as locked until you open the settings page and save it yourself. You will see the box ticked.

How to change it

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. Open Edit delivery address and click Configure.

  3. Under Shipping restrictions, find Keep edits inside the original country.

  4. Tick it to keep the country locked, or untick it to allow country changes.

  5. Click Save.

What the customer sees

When it is on (the default): the country field is greyed out and shows the order's own country. The customer is told to contact you to change it. If a change of country somehow reaches Tacey anyway, it is refused with:

> This order can only be delivered within the country it was originally placed for. Reply to your order confirmation email if you need the country changed.

When it is off: the country field becomes a dropdown of every country you ship to. The customer picks one, and the state or province list and postal code rules switch to match that country.

What happens to shipping when the country changes

Moving to a new country almost always means a different shipping zone, and a different zone can mean a different shipping cost. That is decided by a separate setting, When an address change moves the order into a different shipping zone, which by default refuses the change and asks the customer to contact you. The full explanation is in What happens to the shipping fee if a customer's address edit changes shipping zones?.

Changing the delivery address never recalculates tax. Shopify keeps the tax charged at checkout. If the new address is in a different tax region, your order page in Tacey warns you to review the tax total before fulfilling.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not stop your own staff changing the country in Shopify admin.

  • It does not block countries you ship to at checkout. It only affects changes made after the order is placed.

  • It does not charge or refund anything. A country change never moves money on its own.

Frequently asked

A customer moved and genuinely needs a different country. What do I do?

Leave the lock on and make the change yourself in Shopify admin after checking the new shipping cost. The customer's refusal message tells them to reply to their order confirmation email, so the request reaches you.

I unticked the setting but a customer still can't pick a new country.

Check the shipping zone setting. If the new country's shipping costs a different amount, or can't be priced automatically, the change is refused and the customer is asked to contact you, whichever option you chose.
