How do I let customers edit their shipping address after checkout?

What your customers can do after checkout, what you control, and what happens on the order when they use it.

Written by Joseph Odera

Once a customer completes an order, they get one chance to fix a mistyped delivery address themselves — no support ticket, no waiting for you to notice. This tool puts an "Edit delivery address" option on the page they land on right after checkout, and again on the order status page they can return to later from their confirmation email.

Where customers see this — and the one step that's easy to miss

This tool only appears if you've added it in two places, because Shopify treats them as two separate pages:

  1. The checkout editor, on the Thank you page.

  2. The customer accounts editor, on the Order status page.

If you skip either one, customers on that page see nothing — not an error, just nothing. Adding the app to your store makes the tool available; it does not put it on the page for you. Open both editors, find the Tacey app block, and add it. If customers have told you they can't find a way to fix their address, this is the first thing to check.

Once placed, the tool shows up alongside your store's own order details, with a countdown showing how long the customer has left to make changes.

The edit window

You control how long after an order is placed a customer can still use this tool — the window is a setting you choose, not a fixed limit. Once it closes, the option disappears from both pages, and the customer is directed to reply to their order confirmation email if they still need something changed.

Tacey automatically holds fulfillment only when the order genuinely owes money — for example, a customer chose to pay a shipping-zone difference and hasn't yet. That hold is unconditional and needs no setting.

Holding fulfillment for the entire edit window, even when nothing is owed, is a separate setting and it is off by default. Turn on "Hold fulfillment while the edit window is open" under Global settings → Order holds if you'd rather your warehouse wait out the whole window before picking any order a customer could still be editing. Most merchants leave this off — a confirmed, no-money address correction ships on your normal schedule. Either way, any hold Tacey places shows up as an ordinary fulfillment hold on the order in your Shopify admin, with a note explaining why, and you can release it early yourself if you need to.

What the customer can change

Street, apartment/suite, city, state or province, postal code, and company (if you turn that field on). The country is locked to whatever the order was placed in by default — this is deliberate, and it closes off a real way someone could otherwise redirect a paid parcel to a different country. You can turn country editing on from a picker if you want to allow it.

Every setting, and what it actually does

Find these under the address tool's settings page. Defaults are what a store gets on day one, before anyone touches this page.

Setting

Default

What it does

Ask the customer to confirm

On

Before saving, the customer sees a plain summary of the exact address about to be saved, with a "Confirm and save" step, instead of the change happening the instant they press Save.

When to suggest a correction

Show only when something looks off

Controls when the address-check result is shown at all. You can instead always show a result (even for a clean address) or never show one.

Apply confident corrections automatically

Off

When on, a correction Tacey is very sure about (like a completed postal code) is filled in for the customer automatically, and they're told it happened — they can still undo it.

PO boxes

Allow, with a notice

A PO box address saves normally, and the customer is told their carrier may not deliver there. You can instead refuse to save a PO box at all.

Keep edits inside the original country

On

The country field is locked to the order's own country. Turning this off shows a dropdown of every country you ship to.

When an address change moves the order into a different shipping zone

Don't allow the change

See What happens to the shipping fee if a customer's address edit changes shipping zones? for the full explanation — this is its own article because it has real money and shipping-cost consequences.

Show a company field

Off

Adds a Company field to the form.

Hide address line 2

Off

Hides the apartment/suite field entirely.

Max characters (per field)

Not set

Caps how long the street, company, first name and last name fields can be.

Block addresses we can't confirm

Off

If Tacey's address check can't confirm anything about what the customer typed, this refuses the save outright instead of letting them keep it anyway. See How does Tacey check a customer's address when they edit it? for exactly what this does and doesn't catch.

One setting for this tool lives on a different page. Global settings → Order holds → "Hold fulfillment while the edit window is open" is off by default; see How the edit window is guarded above.

What shows up on the order afterward

Every change — and every time a customer chose to keep their own address despite a suggestion — is written to your ledger: what it was before, what it became, and who asked. You'll find it on the order itself and in your ledger view, filterable by address changes specifically.

When a customer deliberately keeps an address Tacey flagged, the order also picks up a note tag flagging it for your attention, and your orders list carries a small marker so you can spot it without opening every order.

If you also edit the same order's address in your Shopify admin while the customer happens to have the form open, your edit wins. The customer's save can't silently overwrite a change you just made — it's checked again right before saving.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not send your customer a separate confirmation email about the address change. They see the change confirmed on the page itself, and it's reflected the next time they open their order.

  • It does not let a customer move the order to a different country by default — that's locked, on purpose, unless you turn it off.

  • It does not charge or refund anything for a plain address change. Address edits never move money on their own. If the new address falls into a different shipping zone, that's covered separately in What happens to the shipping fee if a customer's address edit changes shipping zones?.

  • It does not offer "Recharge or refund the shipping difference" yet. That third option is visible on the settings page but greyed out, with a note explaining it's coming — it needs a review-and-pay step for the customer that isn't built yet. Don't tell a customer this option exists today.

  • It does not work on every order. Some orders can't be edited online at all.

Frequently asked

A customer says they don't see the option to edit their address. What's wrong?

Check that the block is added in both the checkout editor (Thank you page) and the customer accounts editor (Order status page) — this is the single most common cause. If both are placed and it's still not showing, the order may be outside its edit window.

Can a customer change the address more than once?

Yes, as many times as they like, as long as the edit window is still open.

Does this replace my normal order-confirmation and shipping emails?

No. Those still come from Shopify as usual. This tool only affects what a customer can change before the order ships.
