How do I hide the apartment line or limit address length in the address edit form?

Use Hide address line 2, Show a company field and the Max characters settings to shape the form customers fill in when they fix their address.

Written by Joseph Odera

Some stores need a shorter form, a company line, or a hard cap on how long each line can be because their shipping labels cut off long text. Tacey's Edit delivery address tool has four form settings for exactly this.

Where to find them

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. Open Edit delivery address and click Configure.

  3. Change the settings below.

  4. Click Save.

The settings

Setting

Default

What it does

Show a company field

Off

Adds a Company line to the address form. Useful if you ship to businesses.

Hide address line 2

Off

Removes the second address line (apartment, suite or unit) from the form.

Max characters - address line 1

No limit

The longest street address a customer can save. Up to 255.

Max characters - address line 2

No limit

The longest apartment, suite or unit line. Up to 255.

Max characters - first name

No limit

The longest first name on the shipping address. Up to 200.

Max characters - last name

No limit

The longest last name on the shipping address. Up to 200.

Leave a Max characters field empty for no limit of your own. The street and apartment lines are still capped at 255 characters either way, because that is the most Shopify itself stores for an address line.

What the customer sees when a line is too long

The save is refused and nothing on the order changes. The customer sees a message for the specific field:

  • Street: "That's too long for the street address field. Please shorten it and try again."

  • Apartment line: "That's too long for the apartment, suite or unit field. Please shorten it and try again."

A refused save does not count toward your limit on changes per order.

When to hide address line 2

Hide it only if apartment and suite numbers cause more delivery problems than they solve for your products. For most stores, leave it showing. A missing flat number is one of the most common reasons a parcel comes back, and Tacey's address check even prompts customers to add one when a building has multiple units.

If you hide it and an order arrives that tries to save an apartment line anyway, the customer is told: "This order can't save an apartment, suite or unit number right now. Reply to your order confirmation email if you need help."

Name limits apply to the contact tool too

The address form itself has no name fields, so the first and last name limits only come into play if you let customers change their name through Update contact details. Those name changes use the limits you set here, and a name that is too long is refused rather than cut short. A name that was already longer than your limit before you set it never blocks a customer from fixing their address.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not change your checkout. These settings only shape the form customers use to fix an address after the order is placed.

  • It does not shorten or cut text for the customer. A line that is too long is refused with a clear message, never silently trimmed.

  • It does not remove an apartment line already on the order. Hiding the field only stops customers entering a new one through Tacey.

Frequently asked

My carrier's labels cut off at 35 characters. What should I set?

Set Max characters - address line 1 and address line 2 to 35. Customers are asked to shorten anything longer before it saves.
