An item added from Recommended for you goes into the same order and the same shipment the customer already paid for. You decide whether that costs the customer anything extra for shipping. By default it does not.
The two options
Shipping on recommended items has two choices:
Option | What happens |
Absorb the cost (free to the customer) (default) | Your existing shipping charge covers it. Nothing extra is charged. |
Charge a flat amount | A flat shipping charge you set is added in the same step the customer confirms. |
The flat amount is exactly that: flat. It is not recalculated against your shipping zones or rates, and it can never reduce what the customer already paid for shipping at checkout.
How to charge a flat amount
In Tacey, open Editing Tools, click Set up tools on the Thank you page card, and click Set up next to Recommended for you.
Go to Shipping.
Choose Charge a flat amount.
Enter the Shipping charge amount, for example 4.95.
Click Save.
If you choose Charge but leave the amount empty, zero or not a number, the page says "Charge is selected but there is no valid amount, so no shipping is charged. Enter an amount above 0." Until you fix it, nothing extra is charged.
What the customer sees
The recommendation row shows a note such as "Adding an item adds 4.95 shipping."
When they tap Review the amount, the total Shopify shows already includes the shipping charge, the item and the tax.
They confirm once and pay once on Shopify's payment page. There is no separate shipping payment.
What the order shows
A shipping line titled Shipping for added item is added to the order in the same edit as the product. The flat amount is charged each time a recommended item is added, so a customer who adds two recommended items in two separate adds pays it twice.
Which should I choose?
Absorb if your recommended items are small and light, or you want the add to feel effortless. Most stores start here.
Charge if recommended items are heavy or bulky and would really cost you more to ship. Keep the amount honest; the customer sees it before they commit.
What this does NOT do
It does not re-rate the whole order. The original shipping line and price stay exactly as they were.
It does not apply to Add a product. Items a customer finds through the Add a product search follow their own tool, which adds no shipping line.
It does not charge anything without the customer confirming. The shipping amount is part of the figure they review before paying.
Frequently asked
Can I charge shipping only above a certain weight or on certain products?
Not today. The flat amount applies to every recommended add when Charge is chosen.
Will this change my shipping labels or carrier?
No. The item joins the existing order and ships the way the order was already going to ship.
