You decide. Tacey lets a customer fix or change their own order for a set amount of time after they buy, and you choose how long that is, from 15 minutes up to 7 days. Once the time is up, the editing tools disappear from their order page and any further change goes through you.
Where to find it
Editing Tools → Global settings → Edit window. Global settings is the second tab at the top of the Editing Tools page. Everything on that tab applies to every tool, not just one.
How to turn customer editing on
Open Editing Tools and choose the Global settings tab.
In the Edit window section, switch on Let customers edit their own order.
Under How long the window stays open, pick a length.
Click Save in the bar at the top of the page.
The choices are 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours (2 days), 72 hours (3 days) and 168 hours (7 days).
Customer editing is off on a new install, and the length starts at 24 hours. Until you switch it on, turning individual tools on changes nothing your customers can see. The tools page says so with a Customer editing is off notice.
When the window starts and ends
The clock starts the moment the order is placed. A 24-hour window on an order placed at 3:00 pm Monday closes at 3:00 pm Tuesday. The instant it closes, it is closed: a customer who opened the page a minute earlier and presses save after the deadline is refused.
When the window has closed, a customer sees: "The time to make changes to this order has passed. Reply to your order confirmation email if you still need a change."
Which tools the window controls
Almost all of them. Every tool that changes the order waits for the window: Edit delivery address, Update contact details, Change product options, Replace product, Add a product to your order, Cancel order, Apply a discount, Order notes & gift messages, Free gift, Recommended for you and Upgrade shipping method.
Two tools stay available after the window closes, because they do not change the order:
Download invoice. A customer may need a receipt weeks later.
Ask for help. A customer can still send you a message.
On each tool's own settings page you will see a line such as Governed by the edit window in Global Settings (currently 24 hours), so you always know which setting is in charge.
What this does NOT do
It does not stop you editing the order. You can still edit any order in Shopify at any time. The window only controls what your customer can do themselves.
It does not hold the order back from shipping. A customer can edit while the window is open, but a warehouse may still pick the order. If you want orders to wait, turn on Hold fulfillment while the edit window is open (see the related article).
It does not make an uneditable order editable. Some orders are refused whatever the window says, for example orders paid with Shop Pay Installments, orders created by another app, orders still waiting for payment, and orders carrying one of your blocked tags.
It is not set per tool. There is one window for the whole store.
Frequently asked
Can I give some orders a longer window than others?
Not from this page. There is one length for every order.
If I shorten the window, does it affect orders already placed?
Yes. The window is worked out from each order's placed time and your current setting, so an order placed two hours ago under a 24-hour window closes immediately if you change the setting to 1 hour.
Does a customer see a countdown?
The order page shows the tools only while the window is open. Once it closes, the editing tools are replaced by the closed-window message above.
