How do order-total, product and collection rules work for recommended products?

Write rules that show different recommendations depending on the order total or the products in the order, and understand which rule wins.

Written by Joseph Odera

Rules let Recommended for you show a different offer to different orders: a phone case to someone who bought a phone, a small add-on to a small order, a premium item to a big one. Rules only apply while Recommendation source is set to My rules.

The three kinds of rule

Order-total rules

"When the order total is between Minimum and Maximum, recommend products priced between Minimum and Maximum."

  • Leave any box empty for no limit.

  • The order total is the order's current subtotal in your store's currency, including any change the customer already made.

  • Products for an order-total rule are chosen from your 50 most recently updated active products. The settings page reminds you of this.

  • To delete a rule, clear both order-total boxes.

Product rules

"When the order contains a product, recommend these products." Pick one product for the condition and one or more products to recommend.

Collection rules

"When the order contains a product, recommend from this collection." Pick one product for the condition and one collection to recommend from.

Which rule wins

Tacey checks rules in a fixed order and stops at the first match:

  1. Order-total rules, top to bottom.

  2. Product rules, top to bottom.

  3. Collection rules, top to bottom.

  4. If nothing matched, your default recommendation.

Put the most specific rule first within each list. Two details keep this predictable:

  • If everything a product rule would recommend is already on the order, Tacey moves on to the next matching rule instead of showing an empty row.

  • "The order contains" means items still on the order. An item the customer removed does not trigger a rule.

How to add a rule

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools, click Set up tools on the Thank you page card, and click Set up next to Recommended for you.

  2. Go to When to recommend something else.

  3. Fill in the empty row at the bottom of the rule list you want. The page always keeps one empty row for adding.

  4. Click Save.

A row with a condition but nothing to recommend is dropped when you save, so it can never block your default recommendation by accident.

Warnings that point to a rule that cannot fire

The settings page checks your rules as you write them:

  • "Order-total rule 2 will never apply: rule 1 above it already covers every order total it covers." Move the narrower rule up, or change its range.

  • "Product rule 2 uses the same product as rule 1, so it only applies when everything rule 1 recommends is already in the order."

  • "Collection rule 1 uses a product that already has a product rule." Product rules are checked first, so the collection rule only applies when the product rule has nothing left to recommend.

  • "Not used while Shopify recommends." Your rules are saved but set aside until you switch back to My rules.

What the customer still has to pass

A rule decides which products are candidates. Each one must still be active, published to the customer's market, available for sale, and in stock (when Hide out-of-stock items is on) before it is shown. If every product the matching rule picks is filtered out, the customer sees no recommendations on that order. Tacey does not jump to your default in that case, because the rule did match. Check that your recommended products are sold in every market you ship to.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not combine rules. Only the first matching rule is used for an order.

  • It does not read tags or customer details. Conditions are the order total and the products on the order.

  • It does not guarantee a product from an order-total rule. If none of your 50 most recently updated active products has an option priced inside the range, nothing is offered for that rule.
