How do I show recommended products to customers after checkout on Shopify?

What Tacey's Recommended for you tool does, where customers see it, and the four things to set before it appears.

Written by Joseph Odera

A customer who just finished checkout still has your store in mind. Recommended for you shows them a short row of products on the Thank you page and the Order status page, and lets them add one to the order they already placed, in the same shipment, without starting a second checkout.

What this tool does

Recommended for you draws a carousel of product cards inside the Tacey block, under the heading your customers see for the tool ("Recommended for you" unless you rename it). Each card shows the product photo, its price, your compare-at price struck through when the product is on sale in Shopify, an option picker when the product has more than one size or colour, and a Choose button.

The customer picks a product, picks a quantity, and reviews the amount. The amount always comes from Shopify's own calculation. If anything is owed, they pay it through Shopify's own payment page, and the product is added to the same order.

You decide which products appear. You can write your own rules, or let Shopify pick products related to what is in each order. Either way, you set one default recommendation that is shown when nothing else applies.

Before you start

  • Add the Tacey block in Shopify. Turning a tool on in Tacey does not put it on your customers' pages. Add the Tacey block to the Thank you page in the checkout editor and to the Order status page in the customer accounts editor.

  • Choose a default recommendation. This is the one required setting. Without it, the tool shows as Needs setup and customers see nothing.

How to turn it on

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. On the Thank you page card, click Set up tools.

  3. Find Recommended for you in the list and click Set up.

  4. Under What to recommend, pick a Default recommendation type (A specific product or A collection), then choose the product or collection in If no rule matches, show this.

  5. Optional: under Where recommendations come from, choose My rules or Shopify recommends.

  6. Optional: add rules under When to recommend something else.

  7. Click Save.

  8. If the tool is off, click Turn on.

Your Order status page uses these same settings. There is nothing separate to configure for it.

What every recommendation must pass

Tacey only ever offers a product your customer can actually buy. This is built in and cannot be switched off:

  • The product must be Active in Shopify. Draft and archived products are never shown.

  • The product must be published to the customer's market, judged by the order's shipping country (or the billing country if there is no shipping country). A product you do not sell in Germany is never recommended on a German order.

  • The option must be available for sale, and priced in the customer's own market.

  • With Hide out-of-stock items on (the default), options that cannot ship are left out.

  • With Hide items already in this order on (the default), anything already on the order is left out.

If every product a rule or your default picks is filtered out by these checks, the tool shows no products on that order rather than a broken card. That is why it pays to recommend products you sell in every market you ship to.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not add anything without the customer confirming the amount. Nothing is charged until the customer reviews the figure and pays on Shopify's payment page.

  • It does not discount anything unless you turn that on. Discounts are off by default.

  • It does not charge extra shipping unless you choose that. The default is to absorb the shipping.

  • It does not appear on every order. Orders Shopify will not let an app edit (Shop Pay Installments, orders created by another app, orders still waiting for payment, very old orders, local delivery and business-account orders) never show it, and neither does an order whose edit window has closed.
