Most post-purchase changes are small: one less of something, a different size, one more of the same thing. Change product options lets customers make those changes themselves on their Thank you page or Order status page, for items that have not shipped yet, with the money handled for them.
What this tool does
It works only on items already on the order. It never swaps in a different product and never adds a new one. Inside it are three modes:
Mode | What the customer can do | On by default? |
Reduce or remove items | Lower a quantity or remove a line, and get refunded | Yes |
Increase quantity | Buy more of something already on the order, and pay the difference | No |
Swap variant | Change to a different size or colour of the same product, at the same price | No |
The whole tool is on by default with only reducing and removing active. You switch the other two modes on when you are ready.
Before you start
Add the Tacey block to the Thank you page in Shopify's checkout editor and to the Order status page in the customer accounts editor.
How to open the settings
In Tacey, open Editing Tools.
On the Thank you page card, click Set up tools.
Click Set up next to Change product options.
Each mode has its own section: Reduce or remove items, Increase quantity and Swap variant.
Click Save after any change.
Settings shared by all modes
Setting | Default | What it does |
Allow charging for added items | Off | Lets a customer increase a quantity and pay the difference. No money is ever collected without this turned on. |
Hours to wait for payment on an added item | 24 (1 to 168) | How long an unpaid change holds the order before the hold is released. Also used by Add a product and Recommended for you. |
Only if it is in stock | On | Follows your Shopify inventory settings when a customer swaps to another option. |
How to show a mixed change | One net amount | Not in effect yet: nothing in this tool can submit a change that both refunds and charges at once. |
What customers see
The Change product options row has a Change button. It opens the items that can still change, each with a quantity stepper, and a size or colour picker when swapping is on. Only unshipped quantities can be changed. Before anything is saved, the customer sees what happens to the money: a refund note, the amount to pay, or nothing if the change is even.
The rule that never changes
A customer can never empty their order here. At least one item always stays (more if you raise Keep at least this many items). To remove everything, they use Cancel order, or reply to their confirmation email if Cancel order is off.
What this does NOT do
It does not swap to a different product. That is the Replace product tool.
It does not add a new product. That is Add a product.
It does not change items that have shipped.
It does not swap to a different-priced option yet. Size and colour swaps must cost the same; Allow a different price is shown but not in effect.
It does not work on every order. Orders paid with Shop Pay Installments, created by another app, still waiting for payment, placed before 2019, local delivery, business-account, cancelled or merged orders, and orders past their edit window are refused.
