How do I let customers increase the quantity of an item on their Shopify order after checkout?

Turn on Increase quantity and Allow charging for added items so customers can buy more of something already on their order and pay the difference.

A customer who loved the product enough to want two more is the easiest sale you will make. Increase quantity lets them raise the quantity of an item already on their order and pay the difference through Shopify's own payment page. It is off by default, because it charges the customer, and no money is ever collected unless you turn it on.

Two switches, both required

Increasing a quantity raises what the customer owes, so it needs two settings:

  1. Let customers increase quantity turns the mode on.

  2. Allow charging for added items lets Tacey collect the difference. It appears once the first switch is on.

If only one of them is on, customers cannot increase quantities.

How to set it up

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools, click Set up tools on the Thank you page card, and click Set up next to Change product options.

  2. Go to Increase quantity and turn on Let customers increase quantity.

  3. Turn on Allow charging for added items.

  4. Set Most a customer can add.

  5. Check Hours to wait for payment on an added item.

  6. Click Save.

Every setting

Setting

Default

What it does

Let customers increase quantity

Off

Turns this mode on.

Allow charging for added items

Off

Lets the customer pay the difference. Without it, no increase is possible.

Most a customer can add

3 (1 to 50)

How many extra units of an item a customer may add in one go.

Hours to wait for payment on an added item

24 (1 to 168)

How long the order is held waiting for payment before the hold is released.

What the customer sees

  1. They tap Change on the Change product options row and press the plus button on an item.

  2. They tap Review the amount. Tacey asks Shopify for the exact cost.

  3. They see "Confirm the amount before we charge you" and "This change will cost 12.00. Nothing has been charged yet."

  4. They tap Confirm and pay 12.00. The quantity is updated on the order.

  5. Pay now opens Shopify's own payment page for the difference.

If they press plus by mistake, they can press minus straight away to undo it. A customer can raise or lower quantities in one visit, but not both in the same request; they see "You can raise or lower quantities in one visit, but not both at once. Please submit these separately."

While the customer pays

  • The order has a hold on fulfilment and the `tacey-payment-owed` tag, so it does not ship unpaid.

  • When Shopify records the payment, the hold and the tag are removed and the change is marked paid in your Ledger.

If the customer never pays

After Hours to wait for payment on an added item, the hold is released so the order is not stuck. The higher quantity stays on the order and the balance stays owed in Shopify. Check the order and your Ledger, and follow up with the customer or reduce the quantity yourself before it ships.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not charge a saved card. The customer always pays on Shopify's payment page, after seeing the amount.

  • It does not raise shipped quantities. Only items that have not shipped can change.

  • It does not add a different product. That is Add a product.

  • It does not work on orders still waiting for their original payment, such as cash on delivery or bank transfer, because there is no payment to add to.
