Not by default. When a customer uses Update contact details, Tacey changes the email or phone on that order only. Their Shopify customer account, including the email they sign in with, stays as it was. If you want both to change together, turn on Also update the customer's account.
Why the default is order-only
An order and a customer account are two different records in Shopify. A customer might want order updates for one gift sent to a different inbox without changing how they sign in. And changing a sign-in email is a bigger deal than fixing a typo on one order, so Tacey only does it when you have chosen to.
How to turn it on
In Tacey, open Editing Tools.
Open Update contact details and click Configure.
Tick Also update the customer's account.
Click Save.
It only runs for a customer who is signed in
For safety, the account is only updated when the change is made by the customer signed in to their own account, on the Order status page, and that account owns the order.
It never runs:
From the Thank you page. That page is shown straight after checkout, before the customer has signed in to an account.
From an order link opened without signing in. Someone holding the link is not proof they own the account.
On a guest checkout with no account attached. There is no account to update.
In every case the order is still updated normally. For a guest checkout nothing more is said, since there is no account. When the order does belong to an account but the change came from the Thank you page or an unsigned-in link, the customer is told:
> Your order was updated. Your account's sign-in email and phone were not changed from this page. To change those, sign in to your account and update them there.
If the account update fails
Occasionally Shopify accepts the order change but not the account change. The order keeps the new details, and the customer is told:
> Your order was updated, but we couldn't also update your account details automatically. Reply to your order confirmation email if you need help.
What changes on the account
The email, the phone, or both, whichever the customer changed. If the account's sign-in email changes and was different from the order's old email, the account's previous address also gets the "your email was changed" security notice (if that setting is on).
What this does NOT do
It does not change the customer's name on their account. A name change through this tool only changes the name on the order's shipping address.
It does not change past orders. Only the order the customer is editing, plus the account itself when this setting runs.
It does not sign the customer in or out, or change their password.
Frequently asked
I turned this on, but a customer's account email did not change. Why?
Most likely they made the change from the Thank you page, or from an order link without signing in. They would have seen the message above. Ask them to sign in and update it from their account, or change it for them in Shopify admin.
Should I turn this on?
If your customers mostly buy for themselves and sign in to their accounts, it saves them updating two places. If you sell a lot of gifts, leaving it off keeps each order's contact details separate from the buyer's account.
