How do I limit how many times a customer can change their order?

Set the maximum number of changes per order, what counts toward it, and what the customer is told when they reach it.

Written by Joseph Odera

A customer who changes their delivery address once is fixing a typo. A customer who changes it five times is creating work for your warehouse. Tacey lets you cap how many changes one customer can make to one order, so a real correction always goes through and endless back-and-forth does not.

Where to set it

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. Open the Global settings tab.

  3. Find Maximum edits per order.

  4. Enter a number in How many changes are allowed.

  5. Click Save.

The default is 3. You can set anything from 1 to 20. Tacey will not let you set 0 (which would quietly switch off every tool) or leave it unlimited.

It is one total, shared across every tool

The limit is not per tool. It is one allowance per order, shared by every tool the customer can use. With the default of 3, a customer could change their address once, their phone number once and add a note once, and then every tool refuses further changes on that order.

The settings page says this in a note under the field, and if you set the limit to 1 it shows a warning: with 1, a customer can make exactly one change to an order, of any kind, using any tool.

What counts, and what does not

Counts: every change that actually saved to the order. That includes an address change, a contact details change, a note or gift message, and a change to one of your own shared order fields.

Never counts:

  • A change that was blocked or failed. If Tacey refused the save (for example, a PO box when you refuse PO boxes, or a closed edit window), the customer has not used one of their changes.

  • Keep my address. When the address check flags an address and the customer chooses to keep their own, nothing on the order changes, so it does not use up a change.

  • Ask for help. Sending you a message is not a change to the order.

What the customer sees at the limit

Once the order has used every allowed change, any further attempt is refused with:

> You've reached the maximum number of changes allowed on this order (3). Reply to your order confirmation email if you need further help.

The number in brackets is whatever limit you set. Nothing on the order changes.

Choosing a number

  • 3 (the default) covers the common case: a customer fixes the address, then notices the apartment number, then adds a delivery note.

  • 1 is strict. It suits stores where every change needs manual review, but a customer who fixes their address can then no longer fix a wrong phone number.

  • Higher than 5 is rarely needed, since the edit window already limits how long a customer can keep changing things.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not limit your own edits in Shopify admin.

  • It does not reset when the customer switches from the Thank you page to the Order status page. It is one count per order.

  • It does not replace the edit window. Both apply: a change must be inside the window and under the limit.

Frequently asked

A customer hit the limit but still needs a real correction. What do I do?

Make the change yourself in Shopify admin. The limit only applies to changes customers make through Tacey.

If I raise the limit, can customers who were refused try again?

Yes. The limit is read when the customer tries to save, so a higher number applies straight away to orders still inside their edit window.
