What is the default recommendation in Recommended for you?

What your customer sees when no rule matches: products chosen for you, products you pick, or a collection. When the default is used, and what it still has to pass.

Written by Joseph Odera

The default recommendation is what your customer is offered when nothing more specific applies. You never have to set it up: until you change it, your customer sees products Chosen for me, starting with your best sellers.

When the default is used

  • With My rules: when none of your order-total, product or collection rules matches the order. If you have no rules at all, every customer sees the default.

  • With Shopify recommends: when Shopify has no recommendation for the products on the order, or cannot be reached at that moment.

The default is not used when a rule did match but every product it picked was filtered out (for example, because none is sold in the customer's market). In that case the order shows no recommendations.

The three kinds of default

Default recommendation has three options:

Option

What the customer sees

Chosen for me (the default)

Best sellers, new products or products from the same collection, picked from your store when the customer opens the page.

A specific product

Products you pick, one or several.

A collection

Products from a collection you pick.

With Chosen for me, the Which products setting decides where they come from:

Which products

What it shows

Best sellers

The products customers bought most in your recent orders.

Newest products

Your most recently added products.

Same collection as the order

Products from the collections of what the customer bought.

If a source has nothing to show, the next one fills in: best sellers and same collection fall back to your newest products. This list does not use the Add a product allow list.

Chosen for me keeps itself current as customers order. A specific product or A collection lets you push exactly what you want.

How to change it

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools, click Set up tools on the Thank you page card, and click Set up next to Recommended for you.

  2. Under What to recommend, find Default recommendation and choose Chosen for me, A specific product or A collection.

  3. For Chosen for me, choose a source under Which products. For the other two, under If no rule matches, show these, click Choose products or Choose a collection and pick in Shopify's picker. You can pick several products, up to your offer limit.

  4. Check the preview on the page: the card appears exactly as your customer will see it.

  5. Click Save.

Messages you may see next to the picker

  • "Nothing picked yet. Until you pick something, your customer sees your best sellers instead." You chose A specific product or A collection but have not picked one yet. Your customer is not left with an empty space.

  • "This product is no longer in your store, so it will not be shown. Remove it and choose another." The product was deleted in Shopify.

  • "This collection is no longer in your store, so nothing would be shown from it. Remove it and choose another." The collection was deleted in Shopify.

  • A warning that the product is published to no sales channel. A product that is not published anywhere can never be shown, so pick one that is.

What the default still has to pass

Like every recommendation, the default is only shown if it is active, published to the customer's market, available for sale and in stock (when Hide out-of-stock items is on). With Hide items already in this order on, a product the customer already bought is not shown.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not override a matching rule. Rules come first; the default is the last step.

  • It does not ignore markets. A product you do not sell in a customer's country is never shown to them.
