Draft mode lets you switch Tacey on in your store without your customers seeing it yet. While it is on, only orders placed with one of your staff emails or domains show any Tacey tool on the Thank you and Order status pages. Every other customer sees nothing, exactly as if Tacey were not installed.
Use it to place a real test order, open its order status page, and check that everything looks right before you let customers in. Turn it off when you are ready.
Turn Draft mode on
In Tacey, open Editing Tools, then the Global settings tab.
Scroll to Draft mode.
Switch on Show Tacey only to my team.
Under Staff emails and domains, add the addresses of the people who should see Tacey. Put one per line, or separate them with commas.
Click Save in the bar at the top of the page.
Both the switch and the list are saved together. A new store that has never saved a setting starts with Draft mode off.
What to type in the staff list
You type | Who sees Tacey |
`acme.com` | Every order placed with an `@acme.com` email. A domain matches exactly: `acme.com` does not match `mail.acme.com` or `evilacme.com`. |
`you@gmail.com` | Orders placed with that one address. |
`you@gmail.com` and an order placed with `you+test@gmail.com` | Also matches. A "plus tag" on the order's email is ignored, so you can run many test orders from one mailbox. |
Capital letters do not matter, and a leading `@` is allowed (`@acme.com`). Tacey shows Staff entries that will be saved under the box as you type, so you can see how it read your list.
Tacey matches against the email on the order, so the order you test with must be placed with a staff email.
What Tacey refuses
If any entry in the list is not accepted, nothing is saved, and the page says Draft mode was not saved. Fix the staff list below and try again. It names each entry it did not like:
A free email domain. Typing `gmail.com` (or `outlook.com`, `yahoo.com`, `icloud.com`, and the other big mail providers, including their country versions) as a domain would show Tacey to everyone with a mailbox there. Tacey says: "gmail.com" would show Tacey to everyone with a gmail.com address. Enter your full address instead, for example you@gmail.com. A full address at those providers is fine.
A value that is not an email address or a domain. "..." is not a valid email address or domain.
An entry that is too long. Each one can be at most 254 characters.
Too many entries. You can list at most 50.
What you will see while it is on
A yellow Draft mode is on banner at the top of the Tools and Global settings tabs of Editing Tools, and on each tool's own page. On the Tools tab it has a Change Draft mode button that takes you to the switch. It says: Your customers cannot see your Tacey tools while Draft mode is on. Only orders placed with a staff email show them.
If the staff list is empty, the banner and the section say so loudly: No one can see Tacey right now. Draft mode is on and the staff list is empty, so every order is hidden, including yours. Add your email or domain below, or turn Draft mode off.
What Draft mode does and does not hide
It hides | It does not touch |
Every Tacey tool on your customers' Thank you and Order status pages, for orders that are not placed with a staff email. A customer who somehow sends a change anyway is refused with the same answer as if no tool were on. | Your own Tacey pages in the Shopify admin (Orders, Order changes, Order Merge, the Tacey block and menu actions on an order). |
The Announcement bar, for everyone, including your team. The bar cannot tell who is looking, so with Draft mode on it draws nothing on a real page. It still shows in Shopify's checkout editor preview. | The address check on new orders, which keeps running. |
Emails Tacey sends to customers, for example the reminder to check an address before it ships. Those have their own switches. UNPROVEN: read from the code, not driven. |
When Draft mode cannot be read
If Tacey cannot read the setting for a moment, it hides its tools from customers to be safe. Your Global settings page then says Draft mode could not be read and asks you to reload in a minute. Nothing was changed. This is deliberate: showing an unfinished tool to real customers is worse than hiding it for a minute. (Address checks work the opposite way. They never block an order.)
This is a test gate, not a security lock
Tacey says it on the page: This is a test gate, not a security lock. Anyone can type a staff address at checkout, and a customer at a staff domain sees Tacey early. Draft mode keeps an unfinished setup away from ordinary customers. Do not use it to hide anything sensitive, and do not leave it on by accident: while it is on, your customers cannot use any Tacey tool.
Test it on a real order
Turn Draft mode on with your own address in the staff list and save.
Place a test order with that address (or a plus-tag version of it), then open its Order status page from the email, or from the order in your Shopify admin with More actions, View order status page. You should see Tacey's tools.
Place a second test order with an address not in the list. Its Order status page should show no Tacey tool at all.
Happy with both? Switch Show Tacey only to my team off and click Save.
Frequently asked
I turned it on and now I see nothing myself. Your staff list is empty, or the email on the order you are looking at is not on the list. Add your address, save, and use an order placed with it.
A customer at our company domain can see Tacey. Is that a bug? No. Every address at a staff domain counts as staff. Use full addresses if you want only certain people.
Does Draft mode stop Tacey from handling customer edits? It stops customers from reaching the tools. Orders still come in and are checked as usual.
Can I use it to launch one tool at a time? No. It is one switch for all customer tools. To keep a single tool away from customers, switch that tool off on its own page.
What has been seen
2026-10-01 and 2026-10-02 (dev store): Draft mode switched on and saved. An order placed with a non-staff email showed no Tacey tool. An order placed with a staff domain showed the tools. The Draft mode is on banner appeared on the Tools tab, on Global settings and on a tool's own page.
2026-10-15 (dev store): a customer who already had their order page open when Draft mode was switched on, and then pressed Update my order, read We couldn't load your options right now. (a plain sentence, in their own language). The order was not changed.
2026-10-25 (dev store, this article): the section's wording, the staff list help and the note on Global settings were read on the live page. The switch was not toggled again, because the dev store is shared and Draft mode would hide the tools from other tests in progress.
Not yet driven
The refusal sentences for a free email domain, an invalid entry, a too-long entry and too many entries are quoted from the app's wording and its tests, not typed into the live page. UNPROVEN.
That the Announcement bar is hidden for staff too is read from the extension code, not seen on a real page. UNPROVEN.
That Tacey's customer emails (for example the address reminder) ignore Draft mode is read from the code, not driven. UNPROVEN.
The banner was not looked for on Home.
