Connect ChatGPT to Tacey, step by step

After reading this you will be able to connect ChatGPT to your store, approve it safely, ask about your Tacey records, and disconnect it.

Written by Joseph Odera

Connect ChatGPT to your store and ask it about your Tacey records in plain words, such as "what plan is my store on, how many orders have I used this period, and how many refunds are still waiting on me?". On every live store ChatGPT can only read. It cannot change an order, merge orders, hold or release an order, change a Tacey setting, send an email to a customer, refund anything or move money, and nothing in Tacey or in ChatGPT lets you switch that on. We are testing changes from the chat on our own test store only; they are switched off for every live store. It never sees a customer's name, email, phone number or street address.

This article walks through every screen, in order. For what the connection can and cannot do in general, and for Claude, see Use Tacey from Claude or ChatGPT and Connect Claude to Tacey, step by step.

Before you start

  • An active Tacey plan. Tacey has no free plan. If your plan is not active, ChatGPT connects but gets no figures from Tacey and tells you so. Choose a plan on the Billing page and it answers again.

  • A ChatGPT account that lets you add your own connection. ChatGPT calls it a plugin or a custom server and renames its menus often. We connected from a personal account on the Free plan. We have not tested Plus, Business or Enterprise accounts; on a work workspace an administrator may have to allow or add it for you.

  • Access to Tacey in your Shopify admin. Only you and your staff can approve a connection.

  • Your store's Shopify address, the one that ends in `.myshopify.com`. You will type it once.

Step 1. Copy the address from Tacey

  1. In your Shopify admin, open Tacey, then Integrations, then ChatGPT.

  2. Copy the address shown there. On a live store it is `https://service.tacey.app/mcp`. Always copy it from your own Integrations page rather than typing it.

The Integrations page also lists ChatGPT steps. Those steps use older ChatGPT menu names ("Settings", "Apps", "Developer mode"). Follow the steps in this article instead, which are the ones we ran.

Step 2. Add Tacey in ChatGPT

  1. Open `chatgpt.com/plugins`. (In ChatGPT's left menu this is Plugins.)

  2. At the top right choose Add, then Add custom MCP server. "MCP" is the name ChatGPT uses for this kind of connection; you do not need to know more than that.

  3. Fill in the form:

Field

What to enter

Name

A name you will recognise, for example "Tacey"

Connection

Keep Server URL selected and paste the address from Step 1

Authentication

OAuth. This is ChatGPT's name for "sign in and approve", the same idea as "Sign in with Google"

Shown with a test store's name and address. Use your own name and the address from your Integrations page.

Step 3. Choose what ChatGPT may ask for

Choose Advanced OAuth settings. It only opens after you have entered the address, because ChatGPT reads what Tacey's server offers.

  • Registration method: leave Client Identifier Metadata Document (CIMD) selected. ChatGPT picks it by itself when Tacey offers it.

  • Callback address and CIMD URL: ChatGPT fills these in. Leave them.

  • Default scopes: this is the list of permissions ChatGPT will ask Tacey for. Tick `mcp:read` only. `mcp:read` means "read only". Anything else on that list is a permission to make changes, and changes through an assistant are not available on live stores, so leave those unticked. On our test store, where changes are being tested, ChatGPT listed `mcp:read` and several change permissions and ticked them all by default, so check the boxes yourself.

Tacey is built to offer only `mcp:read` on a live store, so you should see just that one. We have not yet looked at this screen against a live store.

Then tick I understand and want to continue (ChatGPT warns that custom servers carry risk and to connect only to servers you trust), and choose Create as a plugin.

Step 4. Connect and tell Tacey which store

  1. A Connect dialog for your new plugin opens. Continue.

  2. A page from Tacey opens, titled Connect Tacey to ChatGPT. It asks for your store address. Type your `.myshopify.com` address and choose Continue.

  3. Your Shopify admin opens. If Shopify asks you to sign in, sign in as you normally do. Tacey never sees your Shopify password.

Step 5. Read the approval screen, then approve

Tacey shows you what you are about to allow before anything is connected. The page is titled Let ChatGPT read your Tacey records? and is shown in the language Tacey is set to for your store. We saw it in English and in German.

The Tacey approval screen for ChatGPT, listing what ChatGPT will and will not be able to do, with Approve and Cancel buttons

Shown on a test store. Your store's address appears in the first line.

The page says

What it means for you

"ChatGPT asked to connect to your store. You are the one approving it."

The connection is for this one store, and you are the person agreeing to it.

ChatGPT will be able to see: which orders have an address problem and what the problem is; the order changes and refunds Tacey recorded, with their amounts and dates; refunds and payments still waiting on you; your plan and how many orders you have used this period

These are the things it can answer questions about.

ChatGPT will not be able to: change, refund, cancel or merge any order; see customer names, emails, phone numbers or street addresses; see any other store

These stay out of reach, even if you ask. Orders are identified only by their number, such as #1042.

"You can disconnect it at any time from this page."

See Disconnect below.

"After you choose, your browser goes back to chatgpt.com."

Approving sends you back to ChatGPT.

Choose Approve. Choose Cancel if you changed your mind; nothing is connected.

What "approve" gives ChatGPT, in plain words. ChatGPT does not get your Shopify password or Tacey login. Tacey gives ChatGPT a connection that works only for your store and only for reading. Tacey lists it on your Integrations page with when it was connected and last used, and it stops working the moment you disconnect it.

Step 6. Check that it is connected

Your browser returns to ChatGPT's Plugins page, and your plugin appears under Created by you. In Tacey, Integrations, then ChatGPT now shows Connected, who connected it and when.

Tacey's Integrations page listing connected assistants, each with its connection date, last used date and a Disconnect button

Shown on a test store, where Claude was the assistant connected.

Step 7. Ask a question

  1. Open a new chat.

  2. Choose Add files and more (the plus button next to the message box), then choose your Tacey plugin.

  3. Ask, for example: what plan is my store on, how many orders have I used this period, and how many refunds are still waiting on me?

ChatGPT answering from Tacey with the plan, orders used and refunds waiting

Shown on a test store.

In our test, ChatGPT answered from Tacey with the plan name, the orders used out of the plan's total, the orders remaining, and the refunds and other money actions waiting on us. No customer name, email, phone number or address appeared.

Check the numbers that matter. In our first test ChatGPT read the "orders remaining" figure as "orders used" in its first reply, and corrected it in the second. Tacey sent the right figures both times. Compare any figure that matters with the Tacey page the assistant links to.

Letting ChatGPT make changes: not available on a live store

On every live store the connection is read only. Changes from the chat are switched off for every live store, so you will not find a switch for them in Tacey, a box for them on the approval screen, or a change permission on ChatGPT's list in Step 3. Until they are turned on, ChatGPT can tell you what needs doing and link you to the page in Tacey, and you press the button yourself.

What we have tested, on our own test store only: we added a second ChatGPT connection that was allowed to ask for the address permission as well as reading. Asked to change the unit on one order, ChatGPT first said the new address could not be confirmed and asked whether to go ahead. Its own approval box then appeared with a warning, Suspicious content: opaque payload, with the choices Allow once and Always allow. It is a warning and not a block. It appears because ChatGPT is handed a signed code that proves Tacey prepared the change, and ChatGPT cannot read the code. We are working on removing the warning before any change is switched on for live stores; a first fix did not remove it. After Allow once, ChatGPT reported the unit was set, with no charge or refund and no message to the customer, and we checked the order in Shopify and in Tacey's record of changes. If ChatGPT is given an order number where Tacey expects Shopify's own order id, it can answer that no address check exists for the order; we saw this and it is being fixed. None of this is available to you today, so you will not see that warning on a live store.

See what ChatGPT read

Open Integrations, then ChatGPT. Under What this assistant read you see the last 30 days: how many requests were made, how many records were read, and one line per request with the kind of information it asked for and the time. Tacey keeps counts and times only. It never keeps your question or ChatGPT's answer. We have not yet checked this list against a real ChatGPT run.

Disconnect

  1. In Tacey (this is what stops access). Open Integrations, then ChatGPT. Under Connections, choose Disconnect on the connection. The row disappears and ChatGPT can no longer read anything from your store. To end every assistant at once, for example when a staff member leaves, choose Disconnect all.

  2. In ChatGPT (tidy up). Open `chatgpt.com/plugins`, find the plugin under Created by you and remove it from its menu. We have not recorded ChatGPT's menu names for removing a plugin, so look for a delete or disconnect option on the plugin. Removing it only in ChatGPT hides it there; use Disconnect in Tacey as well.

To connect again later, repeat Steps 4 to 6. We have not yet recorded a reconnect in ChatGPT after a disconnect.

When Tacey adds something new to look up

ChatGPT may remember the list of things it can look up from the moment it connects. We have not confirmed how ChatGPT picks up new ones. If you ask for something Tacey can do and ChatGPT says it cannot, remove the plugin in ChatGPT and add it again (Steps 2 to 6), or look for a refresh option on the plugin, then ask in a new chat.

Wait a minute and ask again

ChatGPT shows a missing picture for the plugin, or messages in its own developer tools

The connection has no logo in ChatGPT. This is cosmetic

Nothing to do; it does not affect answers

What this does not do

  • It does not change, refund, cancel, merge or hold any order on a live store, does not change a Tacey setting or send an email to a customer, and it never moves money.

  • It never shows ChatGPT customer names, emails, phone numbers or street addresses. If a customer left a rating with a comment, ChatGPT is told only that a comment exists, never what it says.

  • It cannot see any other store, even if you manage several.

  • It does not keep your questions or ChatGPT's answers in Tacey.

  • It costs nothing extra. It uses the plan you already have.

  • It is not a way to contact Tacey support.
