How do I offer customers a free gift after checkout when they spend over a set amount on Shopify?

Set up Tacey's Free gift tool: the minimum order total, the gift products, gifts per order, and what makes it appear.

Written by Joseph Odera

A thank-you gift for a bigger order builds loyalty without a discount code. Tacey's Free gift tool offers customers who spent over an amount you set a choice of gift products, added to the same order at no charge, with no second checkout and no payment step.

What this tool does

When an order's current subtotal reaches your Minimum order total, a Free gift section appears in the Tacey block on the Thank you and Order status pages: a card for each gift product, with its photo, its name, its normal price crossed out and zero beside it. The customer taps Claim now on one (you can change those words, see below), checks it on the Review the amount step, and taps Confirm and save. Tacey adds it to the order as a real product line and takes 100% off that line, so the customer pays nothing for it.

Because it is a real product, not a made-up line, your inventory, fulfilment and reports treat it like any other item on the order.

Before you start: make your gift product Unlisted

Do this in Shopify first, before you choose the gift in Tacey. The Free gift settings page shows the same four points above the gift picker.

  1. Set the gift product to Unlisted. Create a product just for the gift, or change one you already have. In Shopify admin, go to Products, open the product, and change Status to Unlisted, then save. An Unlisted product stays out of your store's search, your collection pages and your product recommendations, so it does not sit in your shop as something customers can browse and buy.

  2. Know what Unlisted does not do. Unlisted does not stop anyone from buying the product. Anyone who has the product's direct link can still open it and buy it at its normal price, because that is how Shopify built Unlisted (Shopify: Unlisted product status, "available only when referenced directly"). Giving the product a handle that is hard to guess makes the link harder to find.

  3. Give the product a photo. Customers see it on the gift card and on the confirmation. A gift with no photo shows as text only. Tacey says so next to the gift on the settings page.

  4. Know that gifts are not offered on orders that carry import duties. On a cross-border order the customer would be charged duty on a free item, so Tacey leaves the gift out for those orders. The settings page says this too. For a cross-border order that carries no duty yet, use Orders that ship to another country: the default offers the gift, warns the customer before they claim it (one sentence under the gift: Shopify may add an import duty when the gift is added), and tells the customer and you if Shopify then adds a charge; the second choice offers no gift on any order that ships to another country. Shopify does not say before the gift is added whether it will add a duty, and a duty added to the order stays on it, so the warning is the only moment a customer can choose with the facts. Choose the second option if you never want a gift to cost a customer money.

Tested on a live order: an Unlisted gift is still offered to customers and is still added to the order, because Shopify treats an Unlisted product like an Active one in carts, checkout and orders. Tacey does not refuse a gift that is still Active (listed): it also works, and also sells at full price in your store. On the settings page, next to a chosen gift, Tacey shows Listed or Unlisted so you can see which one you picked.

Also, add the Tacey block to the Thank you page in Shopify's checkout editor and to the Order status page in the customer accounts editor.

How to set it up

  1. In Tacey, open Editing Tools.

  2. On the Customer tools card, click Set up tools.

  3. In the list, click Free gift.

  4. Under When the gift unlocks, enter the Minimum order total, for example 50.00, in your store's currency.

  5. Under What they get, click Choose gift products and pick the exact product options to offer.

  6. Set Gifts per order.

  7. Optional: under Gift button text, add your own words for the button on the gift card, for a language. Leave it empty to show Claim now.

  8. Click Save, then Turn on if the tool is off.

Both the minimum order total and at least one gift product are required. Until both are set, the tool shows Needs setup and stays hidden from customers.

Every setting

Setting

Default

What it does

Minimum order total

Not set, required

Customers whose order subtotal reaches this unlock the gift. Money is never a default, so you must set a real amount.

Gift products

None, required

The exact product options offered as the gift.

Gifts per order

1 (1 to 10)

How many free gifts one order may carry. Each claim adds one.

Gift button text

Empty: Claim now, in the customer's language

The word on the button of each gift card. Add your own text for a language (up to 30 characters) and customers in that language read it; every language you leave out keeps Claim now, translated.

Orders that ship to another country

Offer the gift and tell the customer and me if money is owed

Shopify can add an import duty when a gift is added. With the default, the gift is offered, the customer is warned first, and if Shopify then adds a charge the customer is told the amount and the order's record and your edit feed say the order now owes money. Nothing is charged or refunded for you. The other choice, Do not offer a gift on orders that ship to another country, shows no gift on any order whose destination country differs from the country it ships from (and none if Tacey cannot read either country). Orders that already carry a duty are never offered a gift, whichever you choose.

How the minimum is measured

Tacey compares your minimum with the order's current subtotal, in your store's currency. If the customer changes their order with another Tacey tool in the same visit, for example by adding a product, the free gift is checked again against the new subtotal.

What this does NOT do

  • It does not charge the customer anything. The gift line is discounted to zero, and there is no payment step.

  • It does not add shipping. Gifts ship on the order's existing shipping charge. To cover the cost of the gift, raise the minimum.

  • It does not create a discount code or anything in Shopify's Discounts list.

  • It does not appear on orders that carry import duties. On a cross-border order Shopify can put a duty on the gift line itself, and Tacey will not hand out a gift that would leave the customer owing money. Tacey checks the balance Shopify would leave on the order before it saves the gift and refuses it if that balance would change.

  • It does not appear below the minimum. Customers who have not reached it simply do not see the row.

  • It does not work on every order. Orders paid with Shop Pay Installments, created by another app, still waiting for payment, placed before 2019, local delivery, business-account, cancelled or merged orders, and orders past their edit window never show it.

To see what your customer sees, read what a customer sees when they claim a free gift. If the gift is not appearing, use the checklist in why the free gift is not showing.
